The Background of Anita's Organic Mill

Before there was Anita’s Organic Mill there was a little, Old World, European bakery in the foothills of Chilliwack BC called Homestyle Bakery. Andy and Anita Mossimann wanted to bring their Swiss-German heritage to the small Fraser Valley community through their hearty and rustic breads. But alas, the flour in Canada just wouldn’t suffice for their needs. So Andy found a pink granite stonemill, a few sources of grain from the prairies, and he began to provide Anita the flour she needed to make good clean bread.

As time went on, the milling operation started to outpace the bakery operation because word got out that Andy and Anita were making fresh stoneground flour. Not only was the flour fresh and stoneground, but it also was certified organic. Andy had multiple sclerosis and the value of food with no synthetic chemicals was imperative to the Mosimann’s diet. As the wave of Organic Food began to swell and crest in the Greater Vancouver area in the early to mid-1990’s, Andy and Anita found themselves right on top of it. They bought themselves a truck, a larger mill, and a warehouse. They shut the bakery down, tightened down their supply chain and focused on getting their organic ingredients to, primarily, bakery customers in Western Canada. At the same time, Natural and Organic food stores began to open; Andy and Anita became the choice supplier for a wide variety of ingredients both for the bulk bins and for the retail shelves through a burgeoning distribution network. Before they knew it, Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill Ltd. was humming away in Chilliwack.

In 2005, fresh out of graduate school and two young kids in tow, John & Dani MacKenzie found Anita’s Organic Mill for sale through a good ol’ fashioned Google Search. Armed with backgrounds in Environmental Studies, High School Education, Entomology, Holistic Nutrition, and Raw Food Chef degrees and diplomas between the two of them, John & Dani brought their young idealism to a company that had been grown through hard, dedicated work and an insistence on premium products. Andy’s disease had progressed to a point where he was no longer walking and Anita was flat out tired.

Since then, the work that John & Dani have put into the company has resulted in products and a brand that represents their values, a company culture that is empowered, and a loyal customer base. Not only do customers know that Anita’s means Organic, but they also know it means so much more than that. They know it means things like: caring for the earth, nutrient dense ingredients, health, wellness, balanced living, and kindness. This is what is summed up by “Honest, Simple, and Consistent”. Live an honest, simple, and consistent life. Sell honest, simple, and consistent products. Enjoy this wonderful life. And that is how Anita’s Organic Mill came to be what it is today and it’s what Anita’s Organic Mill is all about.
